Abstract Article (2000) 4 VJ 2, 122-131
An Introduction to commencing arbitration under the ICC Rules
Simon Greenberg*
The ICC Court is the world's largest international arbitral institution.
Like arbitration, the power of the Court is generally derived from a contractual
or submission agreement of the parties to have their arbitration administered under
the Rules. The Rules (ultimately interpreted by the Court) and the Court's
Secretariat provide a service to disputants that is designed to increase the
convenience of arbitration.
This article briefly examines some of the procedural rules of the Court and provides
a general outline for commencing arbitration.
* Sub-Editor of the Vindobona Journal of International Commercial Law and
Arbitration and member of the 1999 Deakin University team which won the
Frédéric Eisemann Award at the Willem C Vis International Arbitration Moot;
currently Assistant Counsel at the ICC International Court of Arbitration.
